Messing Facilities
We had a centrally located mess tent for the initial cadre of early Gray Eagle personnel. Mess kits and utensils were used for eating and when finished we would clean and dip the kits in heated emersion cleaners of detergent and boiling water, then a final rinse in clear water. When Batson Hall was constructed we move messing to that location. By spring 1966 the officers and NCO clubs were constructed and meals were being provided there. Airmen continued to mess at Batson Hall or in a chow facility established in the flight line area. Drinking water during that first year was either yellow brown in color or occasionally clear. Lister bags containing drinking water was used by flight line and bomb dump personnel.
